SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF BURMA!

We in Homenet Southeast Asia add our voice to those of peace-loving groups all over the world who are strongly protesting against the violent suppression by the military junta of the rights of the people of Burma to freedom of expression and peaceable assembly.

We mourn the death of the Buddhist monks and other martyrs, who led tens of thousands of citizens of Burma in a splendid display of active non-violence, and who consequently lost their lives in the hale of bullets unleashed by military forces on unarmed civilians.

We grieve with the women of Burma, among them the inspiring leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who have endured untold suffering and anguish in their steadfast resistance to military leaders who have ruled Burma with an iron first for the last 45 years.

We sympathize with the working people of Burma, reeling from hunger and want aggravated by the recent round of oil price increases, while the few who rule lead a life of luxury.

We call on ASEAN to impose immediate sanctions on the military rulers of the country for their flagrant violations of the human rights of their own people.

We urge the United Nations and other international bodies to put maximum pressure on the military junta in order to put an end to the bloodshed, stop the violent persecution of dissenters, and commence the transition to democratic governance.
