INFORMAL LABOR RESURGENCE UNDER GLOBALIZATION: HOMENETSEA SPEAKS AT AMRC 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Homenet Southeast Asia, through its Regional Coordinator Rosalinda Pineda Ofreneo, shared its experience in organizing homebased workers in Indonesia, Laos, Philippines and Thailand  as well as its knowledge of the lessons from SEWA’s rich history in India during the 30th anniversary conference of the Asia Monitor Resource Center (AMRC) held at the BP International Hong Kong 27-28 August.

AMRC is well known for its steadfast  service to  Asian labor movements and struggles in the face of  challenges  posed by  neoliberal policies, informalization of work, corporate financial might, political repression and harassment which have weakened trade unions all over the region. The 30th anniversary conference  had for its theme  “Labour Resurgence Under Globalization” and featured “areas of achievement, innovation, and hope” among the various labor groups and activists present.

Homenet Southeast Asia joined Panel 2 entitled Informalization and Labour and New (Alternative) Ways of Organizing. Speakers shared how “informal labor is resurging” in many countries through organizational innovations  in a situation where traditional forms of organizing formal workers are receding.
