HOMENET PHILIPPINES/MAGCAISA NETWORKS CELEBRATES 2ND ANNIVERSARY AND INFORMAL SECTOR’s DAY
May 6, 2008 was the second anniversary of the formation of HOMENET Philippines Network and also a celebration of the Informal Sector Workers’ Day in the Philippines.
The celebration was very well attended in by participants from different sub-sectors’ organizations of informal economy workers who are also members of the network, trade unions, people from the academe, representatives from FES, and supporters from the House of Congress.
One of the highlights of this activity was the symbolic signing of a Resolution made by network organizations asking for support to pass the Magna Carta for the Workers in the Informal Economy (MACWIE). Bill from Congress, brothers and sisters in the trade unions, individuals and other organizations sympathetic to informal workers. Aside from this, each network organization also sent (in writing) their pledges of support for the passage of the bill.
Also, there was a participatory video (PV) showing depicting issues and concerns of various subsectors of the informal economy. The PV production is for lobby and advocacy purposes on the level of the lawmakers and also of the general public. Of course, tiyangge or bazaar of IS products also graced the occasion.
Participants particularly the IS workers grouped together and shared to one another their experiences problems and how they were able to address these problems.
At the end of the day, they were able to identify what has to be done to improve the lives of informal economy workers. Nobody left the hall without signing the Resolution of Support on the MACWIE Bill because each one believes that the law should be passed and will serve to uplift the living and working conditions of majority of the working people.
