HWPRI Holds First National HBW Conference

The HWPRI held the first national homebased workers’ conference in Indonesia in July, gathering HBWs from six provinces of Java where 75 percent of Indonesian HBWs are located.

NGO representatives who participated were given the opportunity to experience living in for a day with a homebased worker, enabling them to have a deep understanding and knowledge about the HBWs’ situation.

In East Java, the HWPRI is the most aggressive in organizing homeworkers independently. In September, a provincial meeting was held to facilitate the registration of HWPRI as a workers’ organization. During the meeting, organized HBWs shared their problems, discussed their issues, and identified solutions.

Their main problems were the lingering economic crises, political turmoil, and social unrest, which have resulted in loss of orders for HBWs. Some remained jobless while others sought jobs in the factories or became self employed.
